Located in the grounds of the Somerset outpost of internationally renowned contemporary art gallery Hauser & Wirth (New York, LA, Zurich, Hong Kong… Bruton), this beautifully restored and characterful 18th century Grade II listed farmhouse, sleeping 12, is unique.

Dating back to around 1750, the house was renovated by Argentinian architect Luis Laplace. Whilst the transformation keeps true to the age and history of the building, with original fittings and traces of previous occupants to be found, this is a gloriously chill place to come and stay, with lots of fun and arty touches all around.

Suffice it to say, it’s absolutely gorgeous, with quirkily decorated rooms – six double bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms, dining room, sitting room, study, kitchen – with locally sourced vintage furniture and unique artworks by Hauser & Wirth artists on the (often unplastered) walls. A specially commissioned 360 degree mural by Guillermo Kuitca is in the dining room; a video installation by Pipilotti Rist projects the Somerset landscape through a chandelier of found objects and glass onto the sitting room walls.  It’s part of the Hauser & Wirth family, what else did you expect?

Some of the bedrooms have desks, feature fireplaces – one has a separate living area – and all have ensuites with either roll top baths or showers. There are woodburning stoves, board games and art books in the living rooms, a Smeg fridge-freezer, range cooker and dishwasher, cookery books and tea, coffee, jam, eggs – even milk, cream and butter – in the kitchen.  A complimentary hamper filled with local produce and tea and homemade cake await your arrival.

Very handily, the excellent seasonally led Roth Bar & Grill,  the Durslade Farm Shop as well as the gallery and gardens itself, are a just a few steps across the way. The rest of Bruton (Michelin star restaurant, super cool shops) is a 10-minute walk down the road. You can get to the cobbled streets, independent shops and wonderful street market in Frome in about 20 mins and the World Heritage city of Bath in under an hour.
